Antarctica.

This is the blog to my animation assignment - Industry Exercise 3: Extreme World Races Idents.

Note: Client doesn't want us to use the old logos on this blog and no sound input to the idents!!!

Personal Notes between me and Mr Trodd:

30/03/2010 idea: 1, while watching idents on the you tube (New BBC One Ident Montage). a image of snow, then a foot leaves an imprint to the soul of the boot, but the imprint is the logo to extreme world races. Meeting with Mr Trodd 06/04/2010 - Notes

Gone over ideas. Lower 3rd idea- alternative idea by myself. Snow ball rolls in from the distance, gets bigger then smacks in to the screen, with the logo imprinted on the camera lens.

No messing around when it comes to the Idents, Idents tend to be quick and straight to the point, no faffing around. We went over our ideas, and we've discussed what kind of style the main Idents should have.

Mr. Trodd was personally very fond of my stamp idea and I thought this would be a great kind of style to go for. Mr Trodd wanted to include the south pole map and with one of my ideas, this can be easily done from a technical point of view. It can also be easily changed in my storyboards.

Mr Trodd emailed client to get a rough drawing or image of the exact area where the contestants will race against each other.

If we are going to have a character, then the Idents and character have to remain consistent and so be used in every Ident. Clothing- can add the logo on to the clothes, that way we can add some branding in the Ident and on the character. Can also look at what kind of clothing people wear when in Antarctica.

After go over the ideas that we both have written down, we've decided not to go with my snow ball ideas based on the CLIENT requirements.

If we drop the snow ball idea, will we use a 3D character?

Because if we have to animate something, then it would have to be a character. If that's the case then we would have to model, UV maps, texture, rig an animate on top of producing the rest of the Idents- is it worth it?!

We would both love to have a 3D animate human character, but the letter ideas are cool as well, we've decided to do both, and we don't have much too lose as they both look good, but it depends on what it looks like when being watched.

Ideas: 3D looking, 2D- cardboard looking, look up old 7up advert.

Our group meeting went well and i believe Mr Trodd and myself worked very well....... happy days!!

Our brief is given to us by our client - Extreme World Races.

Brief.
As the 3D Motion artist(s) you will be required to produce a variety of products including idents, lower 3rd's and some motion content to be used as part of the title sequence. If suitable this content will be used on the broadcast programme.
The produced items must follow the companies branding and colour scheme as demonstrated in the companies websites. Examples of this can be found here:

Tasks.
  • I would ideally like a small ident to feature in the top left/ right hand corner.
  • I would like a globe to be animated within the ident to rotate slowly. This representative Earth will ideally be photo real.
  • As long as the finished logo is the same as, or as close an approximation of the original logo, this will suffice.
The Lower 3rd's:
  • The lower 3rd's will need to feature both logos from the company websites.
  • These do not have to feature any strap lines as these will be added during the online process.
  • We will need versions for both the left and right and hand sides of the screen for the interviewees.
  • They must also not be too busy as this could be distracting to the viewer.

This the timetable me and Mr Trodd will follow, which we had a meeting about and produced. I believe its reasonable and workable - bearing in mind - if things do go wrong! i would stick to this!
Research started with watching some "Wonders of Our Solar System". i would watch 3 episodes........ the inspiration came out from watching this and the BBC idents: snow and ice, with space and planet earth.

Drew some thumb nail ideas, to decided which ones were good and correct to use. The client didn't want anything to busy and distracting : I learnt its hard to come up with simple ideas, than ambition ones. So watched more idents, which were simple, but effective

Ident 5

Ident 4
Ident 3
Ident 2
Ident 1
Extreme World logo - 3D style:
EWR Ident 1
EWR ident 2
EWR Ident 3
EWR Ident 4
EWR Ident 5

We looked at what the lower 3rd look, should look like, and so we will change the look of our ideas accordingly. We also went over on how to create an Alpha channel in After Effects so that this can be placed on top of the footage. This will also allow us to hit one of the broadcasting specifications- render with an Alpha Channel. We also discussed rendering out in different aspect ratios- 16:9 and 4:3.

Mr Trodd gave me the settings and began work on ideas. On Maya. I want to create the idents in 3D environment. Started with textures and colouring:

This is the one I chosen:
I used point light, giving them colour to reflect off the EWR logo The Font is "Impact".
and textured the logo with this jpeg
.

We spoke about the type of font for the logo, and decided that Impact text style is the closest to the logo, and the client is happy if the 3D text is close as possible to the original

I started by blocking out the ideas: Blending Ident 5 and Ident 1

And produced South pole logo - i decided to test and collaborate both ideas.

This is the template to the South pole logo, from the client: i know client said no, but just this once.

I would've used this temple and be done with it, but giving it a 3D look would be better and up-to date with modern times. I decided to make the British flag 3D looking:

Decided it looked boring and felt the flag should be moving, like a real flag would. I did tests and an animated one but it just didn't look convincing, very robotic and fake. So did some research on Maya and found out that Maya has "nCloth". This mainly deals with materials in Maya - giving it a material look and feel. But first i had to learn how to make a flag move and make it move like a material. nCloth tutorial was essential.I came across this tutorial:

Following the tutorial, i came out with these results!
The method was: first signing on nCloth to an object, turning it to material. In this case it was a plane. Point to surface/attach the flag to the "E" (flagpole sub, didn't want a flagpole), select member, then remove members (the pink line linked between the flag and "E" - look above). Then start setting up the states, lift and drag, so on so on.
Started to put things together:

Had problems regarding the rendering to this ident. The resolution was too high on the flag and the three globes jpegs.

The problems were: couldn't view my work on persp/front, didn't rendering correctly in front view and I needed my work to be rendered in front view. Alex, helped me to find out that my images were too high and maybe the cause. So to be on the safe-side i decided to redo the flag and the three globes. Once solved i decided to render it on Maya/targa/HD 1080. Then imported it on after effects and added glass effect to give it the cold frozen feel.

The bump mapping was causing a problem, but once i got the hanged of it (watching tutorials on youtube and digital tutors), and began work on the other three.

These are the three others i did for the client.

The Extreme World Races logo, which is the ident for the top left or right side. The globe spins around, while on show. This ident is a replica to the clients own logo. The felt the colours needed a change, was inspired by the American sport logo of American basketball (NBA), American baseball (MLB) and American football (NFL):

Here is the link to the clients site: http://www.extremeworldraces.com/
This site also was used in the research.

Same again for the top side: with the word Extreme World Races spinning around the globe. This only was bump mapped to give it a depth feel. The masking on the top/right isn't done well, i overlooked, that part.

Using adobe bridge effects:

This is the masking snap: i needed to do this to hide the Spinning logo, when it is strolling by the back!
We can see the white line trace across the globe:
And the forth one is : for the bottom lower 3rd ident. Used after effect, give the ident a glass effect because its close to being a ice look. I'm really proud the way this has turned out.

This one above was the one which was easy because everything was learnt from the first 3 and i just put to practice what i had learnt.

Final thoughts are: made most of what i had, client wanted simple and new idents. But i wasnt going to stay simple - i believe i pushed my client's limit! and that my idents, have character - and "simple doesn't have character"!

Daljeet Gill's Showreel

I wanted my showreel to show everything i have done but breaking it up in sections and categories. I wanted my video animation to be in just one folder... because it doesn't have much and their not impressive, i didn't want to place it in a one continues video. I wanted my hand drawing to be in section e.g: Graphic, Life drawings, portraits.....etc. I want a slick, elegant presentation and i believe iDVD is worth using and it's already on my mac....unlike DVD studio Pro. I need to have my contact details in the showreel too e.g. Mobile number, website ( which will showcase most of my work) and email address. Let's begin.
